Condor Storage and HPC

March 14, 2012 Leave a reply

Condor Storage was the storage and backup vendor to University of Arizona Tucson in 2011 and worked in close technical liason with Data Direct Networks and Qualstar on this HPC project.

We are proud to be a trusted partner to our university clients and the result is a state of the art new data center on campus in Tucson. The Data Direct Networks storage was selected (SFA10K) for the cluster.

See the DDN storage here: http://rc.arizona.edu/storage/home

Exciting things, 2012:

  • Solid State arrays are finally affordable. We are proud to partner with TMS whom is one of the longest on record provider of solid state and recently purchased by IBM.
  • Our President, Jeanne Wilson, spoke at CreateASphere 2012 on how to restore data when the “DAM” breaks. As it turns out, many Digital Asset Mngt. plans include archival to our very affordable but massively scalable Qualstar XLS  tape libraries. LTO-6 is shipping!
  • Object Based Storage which avoids RAIDed disks, starts to spread it’s wings w/AmpliData and DDN WOS. We are there.
  • Nexsan, late to the Unified Storage arena, releases unified SAN/NAS and it is impressive. They are also the first to ship 4 Terabyte SATA drives.
  • Starboard Storage Systems  and Condor Storage have several published case studies. Unique: iSCSI, SAN and NAS and Fibre, 10GB available,High IOPS, Granular Snapshots, and more. Please allow us to showcase this technology.
  • EMC VNXe is well received by our client base and continues to rack up the industry awards.
  • Condor partners with BitSpeed, for fast file transfer. We had previously signed with Aspera as well, and continue to assist our clients with fast file transfer solutions from both manufacturers.

Thank you to all our trusted vendors and to our returning clients whom have  trusted in our abilities and service. Call us please, for any information on our products, vendors and custom solutions.

Survey Reveals Top 5 "Front Burner" Projects among Clients

Condor Storage’s expertise is recommending solution suggestions for all of these five identified issues. We have carefully aligned with vendors that excel in each of these areas. There is always a built in layer of pricing for the most enterprise rich solution, so how does a client determine the value vs. feature formula that is the best cost, with least amount of sacrifice on features, for his/her exact project requirements? That is what a solution provider spends their time doing, we are professional match makers. 50% of our time is spent keeping a pulse on industry trends, as well as health checks among our client and colleague installations, vendor strengths and weaknesses,  in depth vendor reviews on new products, analyst viewpoints, and emergent and reoccuring themes of our clients “pain points”. Woe to today’s integrator who does not have a myriad of solutions at the ready for optimizing online data storage. It’s becoming a world of online, all the time, instant restore and failover and multiple tiers off primary arrays for cost savings under tremendous growth patterns.  Please visit our “Contact Us” page for no cost, pre-sales consultation. The Whole Enchilada

May 4, 2010 Leave a reply

I’m seeing alot of technical call outs for storage solutions encompassing CIFS and NFS, SAN provisioning and replication with snapshots. Condor offers many vendor solutions that allow for above the norm design in features. We have acceleration appliances for highest IOPS , which can equal a 10 node NAS cluster in performance at an entry level cost of $35K. We have enterprise arrays, starting at under $10K for 14TB of full featured SAN with 24/7 support inclusive. If you call out your technical specs to me, we shall work with vendor engineers to architect an impressive match, feature by desired feature , with terrific price points. My promise, I shall  spare no effort on your behalf in our research phase, if you provide adequate details on what you are seeking.  -JMW

Our 2009 Look Ahead at IT Trends

January 14, 2009 Leave a reply

Our focus revolves around storage trends in the multi-terabyte range.  i.e. Challenges with explosive data growth, how to implement D2D based archival at affordable prices, and ways to scale up and out without being locked into primary vendor choke holds. Tiered Storage was our 2008 theme and we architected and implemented a great deal of it. Email archival also took off, while dedup and compliance issues just seemed to be alot of noise. iSCSI and NAS options are what we were asked most to configure and quote.  Our theme for 2009 is “Front Ending Open Storage”. We already have our favored 24/7 raid array suppliers in place and factoring in cost per GB. at all time lows with green power and equal or superior support/service-we can take on bigger brand names and come out way ahead on cost containment w/o  sacrificing features. What clients still worry about most, is the fact that they have been single vendor biased for so long that if they stray, their jobs could be on the line. We are now talking to former “all EMC” or “All IBM” shops who see the need to tier.  If you could implement a backup copy of all critical files to be failed over to, in event of a data center disaster, why wouldn’t you do that? Cost is the only answer. These purebred shops are now looking at becoming hybrid shops. We can help and that’s what Condor Storage does a great job at.

You must know the game you are in, esp. in today’s “economy”. We are on direct with emerging storage vendors and offer unique front end ways to scale commodity disk to petabytes. We’ve added HPC servers and clustered solutions this year. A carry over from 2008 are value deals for SMB’s. 24 slot tape loaders are a steal right now, as well as turnkey NAS appliances and D2D backup solutions. You won’t find our specials and incentives on this blog very often, you’ll need to get on our mail list this year by visiting our “Contact Us” page. We are happy to impart our knowledge via a one-to-one phone call or site meeting. I hope to hear from more of you with unique IT issues to solve. Bring it on for 2009 and bring me your brand name snobs too! We’ll be gentle in our sales approach, aggessive with our price quotes and will focus 100% on “your unique” data storage questions. To quote a client of mine managing a PB., it’s the not asking that can get you in trouble! Call me directly at 888-472-8028.

Happy 2009. -Jeanne

Condor’s 2008 Theme-Intelligently Tiering Storage

March 13, 2008 Leave a reply

IDC just completed a study of the Digital Universe and if you are a corporate entity with all your data in one tier, it’s time to think a new game plan.  By 2011, there will be 1,800 exabytes of electronic data in existence, or 1.8 zettabytes (an exabyte is equal to 1 billion gigabytes). In fact, the number of bits stored already exceeds the estimated number of stars in the universe, IDC stated.

Start Tiering Now! I have personally been architecting open storage disk “vaults” [meaning 40+ drives in one 4U shelf] just about ’since they were invented.  Condor has seen a subtle shift from user requests for D2D backup projects into smartly bundled solutions for vast network shares, long term archival and secondary and third tier storage, that is truly cost contained. After all, if you know today’s price for a 42TB. vault with all the fixin’s you desire, and your storage needs grow by 200% over three years, you can plan on how much to allocate for your storage budget as the prices seldom ever go up.

Read the study highlights below and you will see that tiered storage may become as commonly accepted as raid technology is now. Green powered vaults with extreme density designs will come from a few select manufacturers, but be OEMed by hundreds of firms hoping to sell you their name on the sheet metal. I have an ROI showing how major manufacturers marketing 14 drive arrays make more revenue from SLA’s. They probably should have all OEMed a 4U 40x drive vault by now, but are holding off at your expense.

What can be done immediately to help save power and cooling costs?
Kenneth G. Brill, executive director of the Uptime Institute recently told eWEEK: “Applications need to be sorted into mission critical, business critical, business operational and business administrative reliability categories. Each application then needs to be assigned to the lowest appropriate data center tier level.” We have the software to do this now, despite whether you have budget to buy storage to park it on. Utilize your older, disparate arrays with ILM software at $4K/per license and start setting policies to tier that data.

The main findings of the “Digital Universe” study:

  • The digital universe is bigger than we thought: 281 exabytes in 2007.
  • The digital universe will grow tenfold in five years.
  • In 2007, the digital universe contained more bits (computer I’s and 0′s) than there are stars in the physical universe.
  • There is now more information created in a year than there is capacity to store it.
  • Responsibility for the information in the digital universe by industry does NOT match IT spend or GDP distribution by industry.
  • A single e-mail with a 1MB attachment sent to four colleagues can generate 50MB of information in the digital universe (based on an IDC-like architecture).

Don’t ask Jeeves, he won’t know your rate of growth! Ask Condor for a common sense tiered storage plan.

NAS Requests Pour In

December 1, 2007 Leave a reply

We’ve been bombarded with NAS price requests lately. Please note for least cost that all of our open storage vaults can be installed as DAS, NAS or SAN with the proper add-ons, as they simply appear as a drive letter to any OS, while running raid underneath the covers. For a turnkey single vendor solution, we are pleased to have two partner solutions. Both are green powered and we can add ILM, Backup and CAS Single Instance Store to the solution plus iSCSI is now available. I have talked to clients whom wish to have three separate tiers of NAS, spreading out costs among vendors.

So what is your criteria for selecting a NAS solution? …I’ll share with you how Land Rover sold me a car and I am tough to sell to: their competitors had lots of features I asked for but they were all upgrades and add-ons to base sticker price. The LR sales guy kept stating “that’s included, it’s standard” on every question I asked. This made it very simple for me to decide, as when all the good stuff comes standard, that impresses me.  We deliver best value to our clients by also offering more features that come standard, and we’ll even let you test drive our hardware for 30 days.
